Product Description |
A network monitor and protocol analyzer for Ethernet, Wireless 802.11b/a/g, Token Ring and FDDI networks. Observer provides metrics, capture and trending for both shared and switched network environments.
Observer is a cost-effective, software-only, Microsoft Windows-based network monitoring and troubleshooting tool. Observer can monitor single segment LANs/802.11 networks and with the addition of Probes, Observer can be upgraded into a full distributed product for monitoring multi-segment LANs/WANs/802.11a/b/g networks and WANs. Observer offers both real-time monitoring and troubleshooting, as well as a complete trending and baselining collection system to view historical data collected for days, weeks, months or even years.
Observer can be upgraded to Expert Observer or Observer Suite to track multiple SNMP-enabled devices, view data from any RMON1/2 or HCRMON probe, provide expert analysis and modeling, or display Web based reports. |

Analyzing Full-Duplex Networks through SPANs, Port Aggregators, and TAPs
There are three common ways to access full-duplex traffic on a network for analysis: using a switch’s SPAN port, a port aggregator, and a network TAP.This paper discusses the technical issues you should understand before you decide which type of technology to deploy in various places on a network.

Benefits of WAN-level Visibility in Monitoring and Maintaining Your Network
A WAN Analyzer offers essential insight into your WAN links, including Service Level Agreement verification, WAN frame visibility, performance metrics and problem resolution abilities. This white paper discusses the benefits gained from deploying a WAN Analyzer into your network and what items to consider when reviewing WAN analysis options.
|
Deploying Probes and Analyzers in an Enterprise Environment
As an IT manager, you need visibility into every corner of the network, from the edge to the core. This paper describes by example how to plan and implement a monitoring/analysis infrastructure based on distributed probes. Because every network is different, the examples shown may not look like your network, but the concepts demonstrated will be applicable to most situations.

Network Instruments Observer and VLAN Analysis
As IT departments continue to implement Virtual Local Area Networks (VLANs) to contain broadcast traffic, load-balance and enhance data security, the need to effectively monitor and troubleshoot VLANs becomes more apparent. This white paper illustrates some of the benefits a VLAN-ready network analyzer provides in managing VLAN configurations.
|
Optical Signal Attenuation and Network Performance
Network administrators who manage optical links have the added challenge of dealing with signal attenuation–the rate at which light dissipates over a network. Attenuation is caused by a number of factors and can affect both network performance and the ability to analyze the network. This paper explains what signal attenuation is, what causes it, and how it affects a network.

Managing Networks with Real-time Observer Statistics
The Observer product family provides over 30 different real-time statistics to monitor network performance and behavior as well as identify network issues. From the statistics screens the network engineer can quickly drill down on the specific incident to identify the root cause of the issue. The presentation provides detailed views of Observer`s statistics and drill-down capabilities.

Network Forensics and Retrospective Analysis
Similar to Tivo changing how people view television, Network Instruments GigaStor is changing how people view network management and troubleshooting. Retrospective analysis solutions, like GigaStor, store terabytes of packet-level data for later viewing and historical analysis.
The presentation discusses how GigaStor to captures and analyzes months worth of network data, quickly locating anomalous traffic and the sources of network degradation.
|
Observer Triggers and Alarms
The Observer product family`s triggers and alarms provide real-time notification for specific network conditions and thresholds for a variety of activities and applications. Specific alerts can be used to manage a wide variety of issues, including bandwidth utilization, VoIP, application and user activities, and traffic patterns.
